Taking place in Ulster, New York and Papua New Guinea, Nick Laird's novel is a beautiful exploration of human existence. The challenge to design the paperback or this book was met with a simple yet effective combination of illustration and bespoke type. Instead of attempting to communicate the complex narrative, a tonal and suggestive approach was taken, finished with a simple matt lamination and embossing. The eye and the sun replace the 'o's of the title, creating a desirable difficulty for the viewer, asking them to engage with the title of the book to in order to decode it. The type on the cover and spine is Roswell, which has been altered to have conflicting widths which suggest movement and rhythm and help to create a bespoke identity for this novel.
